A passenger is dead and a driver has been airlifted to hospital after their vehicle slammed into a flatbed truck just north of Campbell River.

The Island Highway was expected to remain closed near Roberts Lake until at least 6 p.m. Monday as police investigated the cause and crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Witnesses told CTV News the pair’s Jeep was heading southbound on the highway and was passing vehicle when it hit the truck, sending the Jeep careening into a ditch.

The vehicle’s engine ended up in the middle of the highway.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the condition of the driver is unknown.

The driver and passenger in the flatbed truck were unhurt.

A cause of the crash has not been determined.
